What’s the Difference Between Hand Block Printing and Hand Screen Printing?

You’ve probably heard the terms hand screen printing and hand block printing, but do you know the difference? Both techniques result in beautiful, handcrafted fabrics, but the processes behind them are quite distinct—and equally fascinating!

Here’s a quick breakdown of the two techniques:

  • Hand Block Printing: This ancient art involves carving intricate designs into wooden blocks, dipping them in natural dyes, and stamping the fabric by hand. Each stamp is placed individually, making each piece truly one of a kind. The process is labour-intensive but yields stunning results with a timeless, handcrafted feel.

  • Hand Screen Printing: On the other hand (pun intended!), hand screen printing uses stencils (or “screens”) to transfer designs onto fabric. It allows for larger, more complex designs to be applied more quickly, while still retaining that personal, handmade touch.

Both techniques require immense skill and attention to detail, but they produce different effects. Hand block printing tends to give fabrics a more rustic, textured look, while hand screen printing allows for bold, intricate patterns.

When you wear one of our pieces, you're not just wearing a beautiful garment—you’re wearing a piece of art. Each design reflects the passion, creativity, and craftsmanship of the artisans who created it.
